DAY 18 : DEVILS MARBLES - DALY WATERS

15 April 2010.  Dawn at the Devils Marbles.......

 View from the caravan door.....

On the Stuart Highway the speed limit is 130 kms....

The famous Daly Waters pub.  This was once the first place with permanent water north of Alice Springs and saved the lives of the explorer Stuart and his party.  They pushed through to the north and were the first to traverse the continent from Adelaide to near Darwin.  The highway which closely follows his route is named after him.  His exploration proved that the centre of Australia was not a vast inland sea and opened up the territory for settlers;  and the overland Telegraph route which connected Australia to England.

This town was an early Qantas airfield - Ami Johnson landed here - and was an airbase in WW2.

The "servo" opposite the pub......

A parking sign outside the pub......

Interesting decor in the bar......

This little bird flies in every day for a feed - he usually comes in and sits on the bar but when there are too many people around he comes to the bar door (in background of pic above)....

At night we had the famous Daly Waters fare in the open air - Barramundi and Scotch Fillet - the steak melted in your mouth!
